PC Keypad 1.0
by Yair Elharrar, 1992
======================
I've written PC Keypad to compensate for the PC feature I missed so
much on the Mac, which enables you to hold down the ALT key and type a
character's ASCII code to produce that character. It's highly useful in
communication programs.
PC Keypad is quite primitive. It waits for keypad keys to be pressed
along with hotkeys of your choice and after three keys it sends out the
character you asked for. On the PC, to get character #13, you could type
ALT-1-3 or ALT-0-1-3, here you have to use the 0-1-3 form.
Also, it doesn't work with DAs - simply because DA event dispatching is done
before PC Keypad gets to work. It seems the keypad keys you press are sometimes
displayed as-is if you're in a dialog box (the character you generate with the
keypad WILL come out but the numbers are displayed as well), you can solve
that problem by redefining the hotkeys in the Control Panel (I tried
Command+Option and it solved the problem).
To use PC Keypad, drop the PC Keypad file into your System Folder.
Open the Control Panel and click on the PC Keypad icon; you'll then be able
to select the hotkeys you wish PC Keypad to work with (the default is
Control+Option). Changes take effect when you restart your Mac. The keypad
icon will be displayed during startup; to override the loading hold down the
mouse button - you'll hear a short beep when the time comes.
PC Keypad is free, distribute it as much as you want. It is based on
the "Generic INIT" source and includes the "Show INIT" module, both available
for FTP on sumex-aim.stanford.edu. The cdev was adapted from Think C's Sample
CDEV.
This is an beta version, use PC Keypad at your own risk - and keep
a bootable floppy at hand in case you find out it crashes your system.
PC Keypad has been successfully tested on an SE with 1 MB RAM under System
6.0.3, and on a IIcx under System 7.0.1.
